    Environmentally Conscious Practices

Viceroy Hotel Group strives to incorporate environmentally responsible and sustainable practices in all hotel and resort development and operations with its Second Nature program. By taking a team approach across all properties, the company raises awareness and influences behavior in order to preserve resources, reduce waste and decrease the company's carbon footprint as a leader among luxury green hotels.

    Staged Approach

Each Viceroy Hotel Group destination is engaged in an ongoing process of implementing environmental hotel and sustainability initiatives. This course of action begins by creating a written environmental/sustainability policy, and enacting a water and energy savings plan and comprehensive recycling programs—covering everything from paper, glass, plastic and cardboard to toner cartridges, fluorescent bulbs and electronics. Each eco friendly hotel property uses biodegradable cleaning products, has created incentive plans for employee use of carpools and/or mass transit, and has installed energy-efficient lighting and occupancy sensors throughout the destination.

    Programs

At the brand and individual property levels, Viceroy Hotel Group properties identify and pursue region-specific environmental hotel programs. These efforts include The Tides' brand partnership with Oceana, the largest international organization focused solely on protecting the world's oceans. The Tides properties have offered events and room rate promotions that raise awareness and monetary contributions on Oceana's behalf, while The Tides Zihuatanejo welcomed Oceana's support of the property's already acclaimed incubator and nursery program for the endangered leatherback sea turtle. In addition, The Tides culinary team regularly pursues alternative approaches to traditional seafood offerings, incorporating sustainable choices without sacrificing quality or taste. All of these efforts undoubtedly result in an uncompromised offering of the best green hotels.

Viceroy Hotel Group properties also participate in government efforts that sustain both the global environment and the local economy. In Santa Monica, a city with some of the highest sustainability standards in the U.S., Viceroy Santa Monica and Delfina Santa Monica recently received the city’s Green Business certification. This citation signals the implementation of water and energy efficiency measures, waste reduction programs, toxic chemical elimination, and employee awareness meetings—as well as the determination to continually improve in these areas. On Anguilla, Viceroy negotiated with local officials and shipping companies to send island recyclables to Miami for appropriate processing in containers that once left the island empty; previously, the British West Indian isle had no organized recycling program.

    Green Building

Sustainability initiatives are underway for Viceroy Hotel Group properties under development in the U.S. and abroad. Viceroy Snowmass is pursuing LEED® silver certification from the U.S. Green Building Council, and will include low-emitting construction materials, partially renewable energy sources, and reduced water usage, among other developmental and operational mandates. Similar strategies—such as passive energy conservation through design, rainwater and grey water collection and irrigation, and waste composting—are being devised for Viceroy properties currently under development.
